How to Prepare for Your Senior Photo Session
Senior photos should feel like you. They do not need to be overly posed or formal, and you do not need to know what to do in front of the camera. I will guide you throughout the session so we can create natural, relaxed photographs that reflect who you are at this moment.
A little preparation can help you arrive feeling comfortable and confident. Here is everything you need to know before your senior photo session in Kennebunkport or coastal Maine.
Choose Outfits That Feel Like You
Bring two or three outfit options if your session allows time for a change. A mix of casual and slightly dressier clothing usually provides a nice variety. You might choose something you wear all the time, along with an outfit that feels a little more polished.
The most important thing is that your clothing fits well, feels comfortable, and reflects your personality. You should still recognize yourself when you look back at these photographs years from now.
A few things to keep in mind:
Solid colors and simple patterns tend to photograph beautifully.
Neutral, earthy, and coastal colors work especially well in Maine settings.
Layers such as a jacket, sweater, overshirt, or blazer can add variety without requiring a complete outfit change.
Make sure you can comfortably sit, walk, and move in everything you bring.
Choose shoes that work with the full outfit and the location.
Avoid large logos, neon colors, and very small or busy patterns that may distract from your face.
Check that undergarments and socks will not show unless they are intended to.
Before your session, try on each complete outfit, including shoes and accessories. Take a quick phone photo from the front and side. This is an easy way to notice anything you may want to adjust.
If you are unsure, feel free to send me photos of your choices ahead of time. I am happy to help.
Think About Your Location
Your location can help tell your story. We can photograph by the ocean, in a field, around town, or somewhere meaningful to you. I have favorite locations throughout Kennebunkport and southern Maine and can help you choose one that fits the look you want.
Consider both the setting and the practical details when choosing clothing. Beach and trail locations may involve walking on sand, rocks, or uneven ground. You can always bring comfortable shoes for walking and change into your preferred pair when we begin photographing.
Maine weather can change quickly, especially near the coast. A light layer is always helpful, and a little wind can create beautiful movement in photographs.
Hair, Makeup, Shaving, and Grooming
There is no requirement to have professional hair or makeup. If you wear makeup, aim for a polished version of what feels natural to you. If you do not normally wear it, you do not need to start for your photos.
Avoid making a major change to your haircut, hair color, facial hair, or skincare routine immediately before the session. If you plan to get a haircut, schedule it several days to a week beforehand so it has time to settle. Take care of shaving or beard trimming early enough to avoid redness or irritation.
Bring a brush or comb and any products you may need for a quick touch-up. Coastal wind is part of photographing in Maine, and we will work with it rather than expecting every hair to stay perfectly in place.
Bring Personal Items If They Matter to You
You are welcome to include something connected to your interests, activities, or plans after graduation. This might be:
A musical instrument
Sports equipment or a team jacket
Art supplies or a camera
A favorite book
A car, truck, bicycle, or skateboard
Something connected to a club, hobby, or family tradition
These items are completely optional. One meaningful item is usually more effective than bringing many props. Let me know beforehand if you have an idea so we can choose the best location and make time for it.
What to Bring to Your Senior Session
Pack everything the day before so you are not rushing. Depending on your plans, your bag might include:
Your outfits, shoes, and accessories
Comfortable walking shoes
A brush or comb
Hair and makeup products for touch-ups
Lip balm
A lint roller
Wrinkle-release spray
Water
A towel or blotting papers on a warm day
Any personal item you would like photographed
Hang clothing when possible rather than folding it into a bag. Before leaving home, check for wrinkles, pet hair, loose threads, and empty pockets. Remove hair ties from wrists and anything from your pockets that could create a visible bulge.
Take Care of the Small Details
Hands occasionally appear close to the camera, so make sure nails are clean and neat. They do not need to be professionally done. If you wear nail polish, check for chips.
Try to avoid a spray tan or extended sun exposure right before your session. Uneven color, redness, and new tan lines can be more noticeable in photographs. Your natural skin tone will look best.
If you wear glasses, clean them before the session. If you have transition lenses and would prefer them to look clear in your portraits, bring a second pair if you have one.
The Day Before and Day Of
Get a good night’s sleep, drink water, and eat before your session. Arrive a few minutes early so you do not feel rushed. Please do not worry about a blemish, braces, or feeling awkward at first. These are all normal, and small temporary blemishes can be handled during editing.
Most people are a little nervous when we begin. You do not have to practice poses or know what to do with your hands. I will offer direction, keep you moving, and look for the moments when you naturally relax. Usually, it only takes a few minutes before the session begins to feel easy.
Remember Your Yearbook Requirements
If you plan to use one of the images for your school yearbook, please check the submission requirements and deadline before your session. Schools may specify image orientation, crop, background, file size, or how the photograph must be submitted.
Send those details to me in advance so we can be sure to create an appropriate option. It is also a good idea to schedule your session well before the deadline to allow enough time for editing and image selection.
Most Importantly, Be Yourself
Senior photos mark an important transition, but the session itself does not need to feel serious or stressful. Wear something you like, bring any ideas you have, and come ready to spend some time outside. We will create a mix of relaxed portraits, natural movement, and a few classic images for parents and yearbooks.
If you are planning senior photos in Kennebunkport, Kennebunk, Wells, Ogunquit, York, or elsewhere in southern Maine, I would love to help you create photographs that feel natural, personal, and true to you.
